Summary

Ukryté hluboko v srdci Barcelony leží pohřebiště zapomenutých knih – labyrint tisíců ztracených, skrytých či odložených svazků。 Sem je jednoho chladného rána roku 1945 přiveden desetiletý Daniel Sempere, aby si vybral jeden titul。 Daniel zvolí román Stín větru záhadného autora Juliána Caraxe。 Poutavá kniha a enigmatický spisovatel vyvolají v Danielovi touhu dozvědět se o nich něco víc, pátrání po jejich původu mu však záhy obrátí život naruby。 Není totiž sám, kdo se o Caraxovo dílo zajímá – jednoho dne Daniela v křivolakých uličkách osloví muž, který nápadně připomíná postavu ze Stínu větru。 Muž posedlý snahou vypátrat a zničit všechny výtisky této knihy。 Danielova touha zjistit pravdu o Juliánovi se však rovněž změní v posedlost。 Spletité osudy Daniela a Juliána se začnou protínat, až nakonec vytvoří složitý mnohavrstevný propletenec。。。

Stín větru (2001), literární thriller s prvky historického, gotického i detektivního románu, se stal kultovním knižním fenoménem a celosvětovým bestsellerem vydaným ve více než 50 jazycích。 Získal řadu ocenění a vyšel v milionových nákladech。 Carlos Ruiz Zafón v něm poprvé uvedl čtenáře do magického světa série Pohřebiště zapomenutých knih – a učinil tak ještě třikrát, v prózách Andělská hra (2008), Nebeský vězeň (2011) a Labyrint duchů (2017)。

Poor Daniel。 Such a gentle soul, but subject to more violence than all the Larry Sues in the endless Outlander ladyporn series。Daniel's father, a Barcelona bookseller, leads ten-year-old Daniel to the "cemetery of forgotten books," where, as a coming-of-age ritual (think of it as a dilibranero), he is to select a book from the endless shelves and winding passages, read it, and care for it。He chooses a novel from an obscure Barcelona novelist named Julian Carax。 Meanwhile, a disfigured and myster Poor Daniel。 Such a gentle soul, but subject to more violence than all the Larry Sues in the endless Outlander ladyporn series。Daniel's father, a Barcelona bookseller, leads ten-year-old Daniel to the "cemetery of forgotten books," where, as a coming-of-age ritual (think of it as a dilibranero), he is to select a book from the endless shelves and winding passages, read it, and care for it。He chooses a novel from an obscure Barcelona novelist named Julian Carax。 Meanwhile, a disfigured and mysterious stranger is traveling throughout Europe, trying to destroy every copy of every novel ever written by Carax。The connection between Daniel and this novelist becomes a life-long adventure。 One in which Daniel tries to learn more about Carax's life while seemingly everyone Daniel encounters wants to beat the crap out of him。 Yet Daniel persists and the stakes get higher and higher。Don't try and make too much sense out of the plot。 The risks Daniel takes to learn more about this author, especially in post-revolution Spain, defy all reason。 The long narratives from people who knew Carax become tedious as they overlap and repeat details that are supposed to signify some sort of deep connection between Daniel and Carax, but fail。 The underlying story, a coming-of-age tale of romance, is more the cornerstone of this novel and rather loosely tied to the quest。I liked the novel, but the violence was too much and I won't continue with Carlos Ruiz Zafon。 。。。more

to say that it is a well written book, would be a momentous misunderstanding。 such an incredibly pure and honest story presumably about a boy trying to find answers, but in fact, it turns out to be an unarguably marvellous masterpiece about forgiveness, clemency, human's genuine nature ("Greed is most certainly an ugly, not to say mortal, sin。" ; "These people who see sin everywhere are sick in their souls and, if you press me, in their bowels too。" ; “Presents are made for the pleasure of who g to say that it is a well written book, would be a momentous misunderstanding。 such an incredibly pure and honest story presumably about a boy trying to find answers, but in fact, it turns out to be an unarguably marvellous masterpiece about forgiveness, clemency, human's genuine nature ("Greed is most certainly an ugly, not to say mortal, sin。" ; "These people who see sin everywhere are sick in their souls and, if you press me, in their bowels too。" ; “Presents are made for the pleasure of who gives them, not the merits of who receives them。” ; “Never trust anyone, Daniel, especially the people you admire。 Those are the ones who will make you suffer the worst blows。” ; "We're a disgraceful lot。")。the main story fluctuates around the subject of books in general, highlighting the importance of literature - which is quite praiseworthy and fascinating to read ("I was raised among books, making invisible friends in pages that seemed cast from dust and whose smell I carry on my hands to this day。" ; "In the book business you can't even trust the index。" ; "Every book, every volume you see here, has a soul。 The soul of a person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it。 Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens。" ; “In the shop we buy and sell them, but in truth books have no owner。 Every book you see here has been somebody’s best friend。” ; "After a while it occurred to me that between the covers of each of these books lay a boundless universe waiting to be discovered (。。。)" ; “Few things leave a deeper mark on the reader, than the first book that finds its way to her heart。” ; "I had never known the pleasure of reading, of exploring the recesses of the soul, of letting myself be carried away by imagination, beauty, and the mystery of fiction and language。" ; "The cinema began as an invention for entertaining masses。")not only is the plot astonishingly enthralling, but also the author's mesmerising style and sublime writing are the aspects that make the read even more breathtaking (“Fools talk, cowards are silent, wise men listen。” ; "(。。。) as long as we are being remembered, we remain alive。")surprisingly feminist and moral, however not sickening or distracting at all ("All good things must wait。 There are yokels out there who think that if they touch a woman's behind and she doesn't complain, they've hooked her。 Amateurs。 The female's heart is a labyrinth of subtitles, too challenging fo the uncouth mind the male racketeer。 If you really want to posses a woman, you must think like her, and the first thing to do is to win her soul。 The rest, that sweet, soft, wrapping which steals away your senses and your virtue, is a bonus。" ; “Women have an infallible instinct for knowing when a man has fallen madly in love with them, especially when the male in question is both a complete dunce and a minor。”)。outstanding, extraordinary but also ironic and hilarious at times (“Paris is the only city in the world where starving to death is still considered an art。” ; "There is no such thing as dead language, only dormant minds。" ; "Mother Nature is the meanest of bitches, that's the sad truth。" ; “We're all whores, sooner or later。”)to read The Shadow of the Wind is truly an exceptional experience perhaps because “Books are mirrors: you only see in them what you already have inside you。” 。。。more

I actually don't get all the fuzz around this novel。 Yes, it is entertaining and has a very catching story, but the character development really isn't that good。 Apart from Carax & Fermin, the characters are basically transforming instead of developing。 They're making very massive changes over the term of just a couple of pages- especially the narrator (Daniel)。Personally, I really feel like the story of the 'Cemetery of Forgotten Books', and the characters of Carax and Fermin deserved way more。 I actually don't get all the fuzz around this novel。 Yes, it is entertaining and has a very catching story, but the character development really isn't that good。 Apart from Carax & Fermin, the characters are basically transforming instead of developing。 They're making very massive changes over the term of just a couple of pages- especially the narrator (Daniel)。Personally, I really feel like the story of the 'Cemetery of Forgotten Books', and the characters of Carax and Fermin deserved way more。。。 。。。more

I did not finish this。。made it to page 143。 Not because the story itself wasn't compelling but something about it (maybe the translation?) didn't draw me back。 It was easy enough to read, the language accessible, but nothing all too interesting in terms of the writing style itself。Or, perhaps it was because I had just finished reading The Goldfinch and it paled in comparison? YesIn short it's a book about a kid landing a book from a library and how that changed his life。 I picked it up because I thought it's from fantasy genre。 But no, it's a historical fiction which I generally don't like。 But this book, magically I did。 Drawback of this book: Too chunky, Cringey romance, flawed characters(It's a good thing), some controversial matters。 Now, come to the good points, It's a freaking Mystery and I enjoyed every second of it 💙I liked how detailed the story is though it bored me sometimes but I get to know every characters and watch them grow。 I was not ready for the twist and it hit me hard。 The plot is fairly realistic which makes the story sad for some reason。 I hated the book and at the same time loved the story。 Fermín, one if the weirdest and shameless character I've ever encountered。 I should have hated him instead he became my favorite character and for some reason I feel embarrassed about it😳😅About the rating, I wanted to give it a 3 star (because of the romance and the intimate scenes + in the middle of the book I wanted it to be just finish cause I was bored) but the ending was great。 As a result 4 star。 Two favorite Lines :1。 Sometimes we think people are like lottery tickets, that they’re there to make our most absurd dreams come true2。 “It’s God’s dandruff,” he said, marveling, offering the snow a preview of his unpublished verse。 。。。more

Well, it was a good story and of course that is good enough。 But I am asking myself: what did I get out of this story? And I don’t know if I have a real answer。To be clear, this book was a masterpiece of characterization。 Our protagonist Daniel, Fermin, the mysterious Carax all have some wonderful development and they are what make the book work very well。 Fermin is just fantastic and so well fleshed out—I really loved his scenes。 There are a ton of ancillary characters that were also well written and mostly memorable。 The characters were my favorite part of this book。I guess this book is a mystery/suspense thriller。 It tries to dip its toes into the horror genre but doesn’t really take to me。 What appears at first to have fantastical elements in the beginning comes up very short—there is nothing fantasy or supernatural about this book so you can walk away if that’s what you’re looking for。 The reader is basically giving a tantalizing mystery at the beginning that then just slogs for the majority of the book。 The author overestimates the reader’s interest in the initial mystery but honestly, there is only so long that I can care about what happened to some random writer who wrote a book that hasn’t even really been explained to the reader。 Fortunately, the ending does deliver on the mystery in a satisfying way which I did enjoy。 If it weren’t for the delivery this would’ve been a three star book for me easily。The writing is both very good and terribly laborious。 I love descriptions of characters and dialogue but it is overindulgent at some points and becomes boring。 The worst part of this book is that there is actually a TON of telling not showing。 Many times, a character is simply explaining key plot points to the protagonist and this is not so fun—I disengaged。So overall, I did enjoy this book but I have no desire to read on in this series。 To wit—how is this even a serialization? This first book clearly reads as a stand alone。 Am I to understand that the author just fabricates plotlines for three more books? Ugh。 I think I’ll be done with this series but I did enjoy The Shadow of the Wind。 。。。more
